Quality Instruction Matters

STEMscopes believes the most important strategy schools can use to significantly increase student learning is the quality of instruction. Students flourish when teachers deeply understand the content, best teaching practices, and the use of available instructional resources.

Professional Development Tailored to Your Needs

Two broad categories of professional development are provided. Product Trainings help teachers maximize their use of STEMscopes products to visibly increase student learning. Best Practice Institutes focus on instructional strategies that strengthen instruction across varying curriculum products, grade levels, and, frequently, content areas. Product agnostic, Best Practice Institutes personalize professional development based on individual school and teacher needs, with a focus on effective integration of standards, instructional planning, delivery and assessment. With a focus on high impact strategies, Best Practice Institutes also help teachers determine the “right strategy, at the right time and place, and with the right students.”

Our professional development sessions are created and delivered through a partnership with the National Institute for STEM Education (NISE). NISE provides evidenced-based, relevant and personalized services for teachers, schools and districts seeking to systemically strengthen their students’ readiness for postsecondary STEM careers and college. NISE instructional strategies started with the 15 STEM Teacher Actions that evolved from STEM professional development originally created at Rice University. Since that time it has evolved to incorporate new research and what we have learned from our customers - who are, truly, our colleagues.

Product Trainings

STEMscopes Product Training includes instructor-guided exploration of the curriculum’s features, resources, and navigation. Teachers actively practice using curriculum materials during product training. This practice may include hands-on use of materials such as preparing for instruction, setting up classroom rosters, and/or using journaling or other features within a product. Additionally, teachers practice using embedded, high impact, instructional strategies such as facilitating student discourse or using questions to elicit higher order thinking. One of the strengths of the STEMscopes product is that “just-in-time, bite-sized” morsels of professional development are provided right within the product at the anticipated point of need. These seamless, teacher-friendly earning opportunities become clear and more widely when teachers thoroughly understand available resources.

Not only do these trainings help teachers feel more comfortable using STEMscopes, training also facilitates higher levels of student achievement. Research has shown a strong and consistent link between the fidelity of product implementation and student outcomes.

  • Follow Up / Advanced Training

    Let's take a deeper dive into all the resources STEMscopes has available to support teachers and scholars with science instruction. Follow Up/Advanced Implementation Training provides a look into all the additional elements and tools available within STEMscopes that were not covered in the initial implementation training. Participants will experience STEMscopes at its finest as they take a hands-on walk through the Teacher Planner, Assessment Builder, Video Glossary, Teacher Toolbox, and much more. Walk through the student side of STEMscopes. Work with the data created and experience the path it takes once an assignment is completed. This is a MUST HAVE session for all STEMscopes users.

Best Practices Trainings

Best Practices trainings can be used to enhance teaching practices unique to STEM. From understanding the use of the three dimensions to integrating technology in the classroom, these best practices form the cornerstone of the STEM classroom, distinguishing it from a science classroom. Trainings are provided in a variety of formats—face-to-face, self-paced online, recorded webinar, and live webinars—to best suit teacher schedules and needs.   • Always Time for Science

    Time is something that all teachers wish they had more of! Especially in elementary school, it can be difficult to find time to teach science the way that it should be taught. In this session, our experienced STEM coaches will assist teachers in identifying and creating practical, high-impact strategies for teaching science—especially when time is limited. Graphic organizers and easy-to-use formative assessments will be introduced and utilized throughout the session.

  • Develop and Design Engineering Solutions

    Engineers solve problems by using a systematic process called the Engineering Design Process, which includes identifying the problem, identifying the constraints and criteria, generating ideas, and testing possible solutions. With a growing demand that scholars be prepared for STEM focused careers, teachers have an increased responsibility to incorporate engineering into their classroom—often a difficult task. In this session, experienced STEM coaches from the National Institute of STEM Education (NISE) will take participants on an engineering journey!   • Engaging Students in Discourse and Argumentation
